When Mark & June Brown of Woodbridge went to the Mount Vernon Auction House two weeks ago, they didn't expect to find a unique piece of motorcycle history. What they found and ultimately purchased for $35 may turn out to be the oldest existing Harley-Davidson leather coat and riding breeches. Originally discovered in the basement of an Arlington, Virginia home, these early Harley-Davidson leather coat and breeches had been hanging there for nearly 70 years. With the death of the owners, the estate was auctioned off. At the auction, most of the crowd shied away from the pile of stiff, moldy and foul smelling leather with the exception of Mr. Brown, whose curiosity led him to peel back the leather and peer inside to find the Harley-Davidson logo. Inside the pockets were a leather beret, vintage matchbooks, and betting tickets from a 17 November 1931 Maryland horse race. Photos were sent to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee where a reference was found in one of their 1927 catalogues, although the set may have been made earlier (the logo in the riding breeches was first introduced in 1919). Their best guess was mid to late 1920s.
Are they the oldest? Attempts have been made, without success, to find an equal or older set in existence here in the United States and Canada. Neither the Harley-Davidson Museum nor the Smithsonian have any. Although an offer was made by the Harley-Davidson Museum, Mr. Brown turned then down and will place the set on eBay to be auctioned on 9 July through 18 July 2001. The leather is in poor condition - there’s even dry rot in places. But, with the 100th anniversary of H-D right around the corner, this set would make a great display piece or pattern for producing vintage replicas. Even in the condition the set is in, if it can be authenticated as the oldest set in existence, it’s value could equal or exceed the value of the oldest set of Levis that were auctioned by the History Channel on eBay for $46,532. The Levi Strauss Company purchased them on May 24th as a pattern to produce an exact replica for their Levi's Vintage Clothing line.
Can it get better? Possibly, because in the pile of leather was an even rarer set of late 1920s women’s leather breeches (brand unknown). With only a handful of women involved in motorcycling in the 1920s, very few were ever made. These may prove to be the only ones in existence as well.

When Mark & June Brown of Woodbridge went to the Mount Vernon Auction House two weeks ago, they didn't expect to find a unique piece of motorcycle history. What they found and ultimately purchased for $35 may turn out to be the oldest existing Harley-Davidson leather coat and riding breeches. Originally discovered in the basement of an Arlington, Virginia home, these early Harley-Davidson leather coat and breeches had been hanging there for nearly 70 years. With the death of the owners, the estate was auctioned off. At the auction, most of the crowd shied away from the pile of stiff, moldy and foul smelling leather with the exception of Mr. Brown, whose curiosity led him to peel back the leather and peer inside to find the Harley-Davidson logo. Inside the pockets were a leather beret, vintage matchbooks, and betting tickets from a 17 November 1931 Maryland horse race. Photos were sent to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee where a reference was found in one of their 1927 catalogues, although the set may have been made earlier (the logo in the riding breeches was first introduced in 1919). Their best guess was mid to late 1920s.
Are they the oldest? Attempts have been made, without success, to find an equal or older set in existence here in the United States and Canada. Neither the Harley-Davidson Museum nor the Smithsonian have any. Although an offer was made by the Harley-Davidson Museum, Mr. Brown turned then down and will place the set on eBay to be auctioned on 9 July through 18 July 2001. The leather is in poor condition - there’s even dry rot in places. But, with the 100th anniversary of H-D right around the corner, this set would make a great display piece or pattern for producing vintage replicas. Even in the condition the set is in, if it can be authenticated as the oldest set in existence, it’s value could equal or exceed the value of the oldest set of Levis that were auctioned by the History Channel on eBay for $46,532. The Levi Strauss Company purchased them on May 24th as a pattern to produce an exact replica for their Levi's Vintage Clothing line.
Can it get better? Possibly, because in the pile of leather was an even rarer set of late 1920s women’s leather breeches (brand unknown). With only a handful of women involved in motorcycling in the 1920s, very few were ever made. These may prove to be the only ones in existence as well.

For trade only : 1920's authentic Indian racing jersey, dark blue with red felt Indian script across the chest, racer has had some obvious spills with it as you can notice on the sleeves. Otherwise good condition. It's the same jersey which was worn by boardtrack racer Johnny Seymour in 1924 and hillclimber Bob Armstrong in 1929 (check out the pics in Hatfield's books). Of course I can't guarantee this jersey belonged to one of these famous racers, but it allows to date it from the 1920's (no zipper on the collar, which is just plain round, no dot on the second "i" of Indian, same loop in the first big "I" etc). Looking to trade it for a vintage 1920's to 1960's Harley racing jersey, preferably one of the white ones with black sleeves and HARLEY-DAVIDSON block letters across the chest (front & back usually).
