*indian101@gmx.at: Concerning: 1929 Harley JD platring and finishing details.

I would appreciate a lot if someone could help me with information or links where I can find out details on the original plating (and finishing) on 1929 Harley JDs.
In particular I would be interested in how the cylinders and rockers have been finished on these models and if nickel or chrome plating was used on the last year of the JD.
Furthermore I would be very interested in a list that shows which parts have been parkerized, cad-plated, chrome/nickel plated or painted in black / bike colour.

Does anyone have an idea where to get this information from (I have J.Hattfield´s Inside Harley Davidson and some parts lists now...)

Furthermore I am would need the following information:

Is there anyone who reproduces the dual-pipe exhaust?
Have drop-center rims been available as an extra in 1929?

Thanks for your help & Best Wishes,
flo

*SunCave4@hotmail.com: I am receiving a 1929 triumph frame from a 175 model X recently purchased on eBay. I will be receiving the tank shortly there after. After numerous days of searching online, (about 30 hrs. total!) I fail to find any pictures, specifications, or links for this particular model. I did find images of a 1929 model W, but the engine mounts are totally different than on the frame I purchased. The frame/tank combination appears the same, but my frame looks as though it mounts a much larger motor. Does anyone have any information or links for this motorcycle? Especially pictures, so I may see the appropriate appearance of this bike in origional condition? I would be eternally grateful!!! Thanx!

*bulletben@net-magic.net: How can I get the countershaft sprocket of my 1978 Sporty without factory tools?

*harleyxa@zoomshare.com: Jibbs, I think the speed drive unit is on the top toward the back of the case, dead center between the "primary" and the gear case. Directly in front of the center downtubes (for your seat). You could probably get to it from the right side of the bike. I'm not a mechanic but it seems to me that during those years, the drive unit would work off of the transmission area near the motor sprocket. Hope that helps!

*airventure@live.com: 1965 xlh I cannot locate where the speedo-cable attaches to engine, service manual says it attaches behind sprocket cover near kickstarter. There is nothing there to mount to, and it doe's not mount to wheel either. I'm mystified. Any help would be great.

*timalsleben@yahoo.com: I know this may sound strange but check the rubber connectors on the ends of the wire, they may conduct electricity.......ya, you read it correctly. I had one new wire harness do the same for me and on a wim, checked the rubber on the ends. Apparently when they wher made, they had some metal shavings mixed in with them thus shorting out the bike. Can't hurt to check out the dumb things.

*jsm.clark@verizon.net: OK, I need some help. '51 WL 45" I've put on a new wiring harness, I have checked every terminal multiple times, tested each possibility for a dead short but cannot find it! I went so far as to purchase a new complete dash assembly pre-wired and have the same issue,The second I hook up power to it I start to heat up the hot wire coming from the battery. Can someone point me in the right direction for a information source or is there something i'm not seeing on my wiring diagram, maybe a one year only thing with the 51's, extra ground somewhere? Hell I don't know I'm grasping at straws now??? Ant help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

*JohnnyTCB@att.net: Hello, I have a 1940 Indian Scout 30:50. I am having a problem, which I assume is carburetor/altitude related. I live at 4500 ft. and the carb is a Linkert 741-1. Under load power drops off bigtime and spark must be advanced all the way, always. Downhill is just fine, but under load it backfires through exhaust. I leaned it out as much as I dare without causing it to overheat. Timing is on the money. Is there another (newer) carb I can get that I can rejet? Also, the spring inside the bowl doesn't seem to be holding (keeping pressure) on anything. What is the purpose of the spring? It touches the bottom of the bowl and up to the orifice tube that leads to the venturi. Any help would be appreciated.

*arve.tverraaen@fks.fmcti.com: I`ve found two nice antique headbadges that i got from an old lady who`d found them in a drawer after her late husband.
She remembered two old motorcycles he used to have in the shed in the 30`s or 40`s, one was very skinny and royal blueish black. They were very old even back then.
The first headbadge has Reading Standard on it around the edge and a big "R" in the middle, it`s very beautyfull and detailed. looks like copper plated steel.
The next one says Flying Merkel in what used to be black on golden background with two wings abowe.
Must be pretty old since the motorcycles had head badges?
Any ideas what these are and what kind of bikes she remembered?
Any help appreciated, thanks.

*36knuck@sbcglobal.net: I heard once that the 36E knucklehead motorcycles were liable to be equipped with almost any of the production changes ? Possibly the individual that I heard this from just meant that they followed a different production stage than the 36ELs. Is there any truth to this?

*mail@winicker-lieber.de: Hy !
I own a Harley 45" frame (3 bolt gear, 2 bolts for clutch wire). The frame originally seems to be black and has no adaptions for military oil bath air cleaners. Therfore I assume, that it came from a civil 45"...(between 1940 and 1947 ?). It also has cadmium plated cones for the fork.
When I bougt it, a WLC type fork (or servi car ?) was mouted: Because it has just the same old black colour as the frame, it seems that this fork always was mouted in that frame.

My questions:
1.) Is it possible to identfy the correct manufacturing year of the frame ? Were there any modifications at this type of frame during this years ?

2.) Is it possible, that after the war wlc forks originally were mounted on civil bikes ?

I hope, you will understand my poor "english"...

Thanks for answers !!!

Frank

*rhetort@yahoo.com: I have a motorcycle that has Tecnomoto Motorini Franco written on it. It is very small dirt bike for a child. It has Del Lorto SHA14 12, Made in Italy, and OLIO-Carico/Livello Does this sound familiar to anyone? It was second hand in approx 1982. It has an orange gas tank and spiral chrome suspension rods on the rear. Doesn't run but is complete, I'm no mechanic so it may be a fuse plug or blocked fuel line. I noticed a similar post earlier on so thought I would try here :)
Would anyone collect this bike or want it, or is it scrap heap material? Moving house and can't take it with us, thanks.

*ebuyouAT@dm-tech.net: Pan55head: You asked "I have seen H-D frames advertised with a G code. What does it mean and where is its location on the frame. Also, any tips for dating H-D frames from 1948-1954/1955-1957 would be appreciated."

The answer is: Don't know what a G code is however, frame dating from 1948-52 Big Twin is done by the horn mount bracket. in 1949 and 1950, the holes were 10-24 threaded. In 1951, the holes were 12-24 threaded with rounded corners. 1952-1965 the frame production date stamp is on the gear case side (right) of the combination seat bar, tank and motor mount bracket. It consists of a number followed by a letter (2=1952 if on the wishbone frame and 2=1962 on the swing-arm frame). The letter is the month where A=January and L=December.

Hope this helps.
